Back to school after 2 decades!
Back to school after 2 decades!

Neetaba Mansang Jadeja is unlike any other woman in the village of Mithoi. What separates her from others is her genuine persistence at pursuing a dream she had to abandon. Mother of three, Neetaba(35) is one of the rare few who have taken the stride towards completing her primary education.

She has been attending classes and appearing for examinations under the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Picking those books up after 22 long years and gathering the courage to appear for examinations with younger students was no deterrent for Neeta’s persistence. She was always a keen learner and wanted to continue studying. However, her father’s financial condition made it impracticable for her to do so. She eventually had to drop out of school after Class V. Neeta was truly disheartened when her daughter met with the same fate. Her daughter had to drop out of school after Class XI due to the same reason.

Brimming Ponds, Abundant Harvests

“I had never imagined that I would get to see so much water here in my lifetime”, exclaims farmer Amarsangh Bhikubha in awe as he stands admiring the sight of a pond that once lay barren.

The brimming pond in Jakhar is one of the several water bodies brought back to life as a result of intensive water management interventions done Jakhar and its neighbouring villages. Jakhar is among the coastal villages of Jamnagar district that have been facing high salinity in their water and soil since decades. Amarsangh, like many others, harvested a single seasonal crop a year on his rainfed land of 10 bighas before the ‘cut-off trenching activity’ in the pond, As a consequence of Nayara Energy's rigorous assessments and strategic interventions for water resource management, the storage capacity of the pond and other water bodies increased leading to better irrigation, more crops per year and considerable increase in the crop yield. He saw an increase in the annual yield of cotton from 300 kg to 440 kg, and his profit grew significantly from Rs. 87,000 to Rs. 1.72 lakhs in two years.
